FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY CAN AFFECT
CREDIT UNIONS AND THEIR MEMBERS
AT&T recently reported a spamming and phishing scam involving prepaid cell
phones that has occurred since January 2011. The spamming solicits credit union
customers to call a number that attempts to obtain account information. AT&T has
cancelled hundreds of prepaid accounts due to the fraud and continues to investigate
fraudulent activity.
Credit unions should advise members not to respond to a text message requesting
share account or other personal information. Consumers who suspect that they have
become victims of a phishing scam should be advised to contact the fraud department
of each of the three major credit bureaus (see listings at the right) and report that
their identities have been stolen. They should also consider placing a fraud alert on
their files and request that no new credit be granted without their prior approval.

In other news, the NCUA recently became aware of fraudulent activities using NCUA
corporate checks drawn off of Telho Credit Union, a fake credit union. These
fraudulent checks are mailed via FedEx to consumers with no attached instructions.
If deposited, these checks will be returned as a fraudulent item. Below is a sample of
a fraudulent check purporting to be from the NCUA:

Credit unions should advise consumers who suspect that they have received one of
these fraudulent checks not to deposit the item. For additional information, please

NEW NCUA WEBSITE LAUNCHED (FROM PAGE 7)

translated the consumer site into Spanish. Both sites incorporate
the latest web technologies.
